How to transfer programs from one Windows PC to another

Have you ever, while looking to migrate to a new PC, backed out at the last minute? One of the reasons people don’t give up their love for older laptops is because of their comfort zones. Archives and custom-made installations evoke a sense of familiarity and ease that many are not ready to part with.

Transferring programs between PCs has been around since the era of floppy disks and CDs. While offline methods haven’t completely disappeared (and they don’t cost you anything), most of us are too busy for a manual survey. Fortunately, there are apps to parse through all of our messy legacy apps and load them onto a new PC. Let’s take a look at some of them.

Decide which PC transfer tool to use

Zinstall Win Win is currently a market leader in Windows PC transfer solutions, working with the entire range of Windows, from XP to Windows 10. This is a great option if you are looking for a quick and easy transfer of the entire environment. familiar from your computer. Although the software is easy to use, it also comes with a high price tag.

If you want to save money, Laplink’s PCmover Professional does a good job with assisted migration. It’s also Microsoft’s recommended migration solution and comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee. There are some transfer limitations. For example, when you are migrating to a new operating system. Additionally, hardware drivers for some printers may not transfer smoothly. PCmover Express, a discounted version of the full software, costs even less but has very limited applications in terms of product features.

EaseUS Todo PCTrans Pro Solution is another one-click PC transfer solution that will be discussed here.

1. PCmover Professional by Laplink

PCmover must be installed on both PCs and is valid for unlimited transfers after purchase. According to the information on the welcome screen, you cannot transfer your programs from a new operating system to an old one. The installation wizard must also be deployed on both PCs and must be connected via the same LAN.

In the next stage, you can select the transfer mode of your files and applications. You may need the help of Windows Update Assistant if you are migrating from an inferior Microsoft operating system.

Once you select PC to PC transfer, you will need to confirm the oldest PC from which the programs will originate. The software will automatically ask you for a “new PC” at the transfer stage.

Before preparing the transfer, you will need to choose the connection method. You can transfer offline using Laplink Transfer Cables or via file storage devices such as CDs or USB sticks. In the following screenshot, we select Wi-Fi or wired LAN networks.

PCmover starts scanning the old PC for existing files and programs.

Once done, it asks you to set up the transfer. You can also opt for email and SMS notification alerts. After moving to a new PC, the software must be installed again. PCmover can detect the old computer on the same LAN and then proceed to a full (or selective) transfer of applications. Depending on the size of the program and Internet speeds, the entire transfer can be completed in four to six hours.

2. EaseUS All PCTrans Professional

The EaseUS Todo PCTrans Pro solution costs almost the same as PCmover and is available on the official website. The free version allows you to select only two applications.

Everything from installation to transfer rates feels somewhat similar to the previous section.

However, there is a small difference. Unlike PCmover’s step-by-step setups for individual PCs, PCTrans must be allowed to run on both computers simultaneously. There are significantly fewer steps involved.

If, for some reason, PCTrans cannot detect the old computer, use a “+” prefix with the IP address. Once it is successfully detected, simply press “Connect” and sit back until the transfer is complete.

Regardless of which transfer solution you use, it is recommended to opt for a professional edition instead of the basic/free ones. Enterprise editions that serve multiple users and computers will be more economical for small and medium-sized businesses.
