Meta unveils its monthly subscription for Instagram and Facebook to remove ads in the EU

Half introduced a paid subscription which will remove advertisements from Facebook and Instagram. The service is available throughout the European Union and costs 9.99 euros per month on the web or 12.99 euros per month on iOS and Androidto account for the additional costs for these platforms.

Regardless of where purchased, the subscription will apply to all linked Facebook and Instagram accounts in a user’s Account Center. Until March 1, 2024, the initial subscription covers all linked accounts in a user’s Account Center. However, starting March 1, 2024, an additional cost of 6 euros/month on the web and 8 euros/month on iOS and Android will apply for each additional account listed in a user’s Account Center. The ad-free subscription will be available to those aged 18 and over.

Meta states: “We believe in an ad-supported Internet, which gives people access to personalized products and services, regardless of their economic status. Furthermore, it allows small businesses to reach potential customers, grow their business and create new markets, boosting the growth of the European economy. Like other companies, we will continue to champion the need for an ad-supported Internet, including with our new subscription offering in the EU, EEA and Switzerland. But we respect the spirit and purpose of these evolving European regulations and are committed to complying with them.”

“The option that allows you to purchase a ad-free subscription complies with the requirements of European regulators, giving users choice and allowing Meta to continue to serve all people in the EU, EEA and Switzerland. In its ruling, the CJEU expressly recognized that a subscription model, such as the one we are announcing, is a valid form of consent for an ad-funded service.”

This announcement confirms what was previously indicated by a report.
