Microsoft launches Surface 2: prices, specifications and accessories

Microsoft officially launches Surface 2, Surface Pro 2, and amazing new accessories at New York event. This is the company’s second attempt to convince customers that the home tablet is worth every penny.

At today’s event, the software giant announced that both tablets will be available on October 22, just four days after the release of Windows 8.1.

Customers who want to be among the first people to get their hands on the new tablet can pre-order a Surface 2 or Pro 2 starting September 24, 2013 at 8:00 a.m. ET at any Microsoft Store, Best Buy, or at Microsoft Online store in the United States and Canada.

Additionally, the tablets will also be launched in 21 markets including: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom on October 22 and China in early November. More countries will be announced in the near future.


The Surface 2 with Windows RT 8.1 price starts at $449 for the 32GB model without a cover and there is also the 64GB model which will cost $549.

The Surface Pro 2 price, on the other hand, starts at $899 for the 64GB model and $999 for the 128GB version with 4GB of RAM, while the 256GB and 512GB models will have 8GB. of RAM and will cost $1,299 and $1,799 respectively. (Remember that each Surface Pro 2 also comes with a stylus.)

Note: Microsoft will continue to sell the Surface RT and Surface Pro at current prices of $349 and $799. It is unknown when the company will discontinue these devices.

Let’s review the technical specifications

Surface 2: The second generation looks identical to the current model and is powered by an NVidia Tegra 4 processor (ARM-based), a 10.6-inch 1920 x 1080 Full HD ClearType display, Bluetooth version 4, a 3.5-megapixel front camera, and a rear camera. 5 megapixels (both capable of recording 1080p video even in low light), USB 3.0 port, micro-SD expansion slot with support for up to 64GB, new two-position stand, HD video output. It will also come preloaded with Windows RT 8.1 and Microsoft Office 2013 RT, including Outlook RT.

Surface 2 now also comes in silver (only), with Microsoft promising up to 10 hours of video playback on a single charge, which is a 25% improvement in battery life compared to the previous version. The new device is less than 9 mm thick and weighs 1.5 kilos.

Surface Pro 2: As the ARM Pro 2 version also looks exactly the same as its predecessor and is powered by an Intel Core i5 Haswell processor, the option of 4 GB or 8 GB of RAM, 1080p Full HD ClearType display with 46% more color accuracy , Dolby sound, 2 LifeCam 720p cameras, Bluetooth version 4, USB 3.0 port, micro-SD expansion slot with support for up to 64 GB, new two-position stand, HD video output and digital pen for taking notes or drawing.

Battery life has also improved by 75%, providing up to 7 hours of battery life on a single charge. Graphics performance has increased by 50% and system performance has also increased by 20% on average. The company also claims that the Surface Pro 2 is 95% faster than most laptops on the market today.

Customers will also notice that the Windows logo no longer appears behind the device, it now simply says Surface on either version.

Microsoft is also introducing seven new accessories for the new Surface family:

Cover type 2: This is a new cover that is 1mm thinner than the previous version and has backlit keys and comes in purple, black, magenta and cyan. It is priced at $129.99 and will be available in the coming months.

Tap Deck 2: The new Touch Cover is just 2.75mm thick, has illuminated keys and is more accurate when registering keystrokes, thanks to more than 1,000 sensors. It is priced at $119.99 and will be available to order on September 24.

Power Cover: This new cover looks and works the same as the standard cover, but comes with a battery that can extend the battery life of the Surface 2, Pro 2, and Pro models by up to 50%. Power Cover is priced at $199.99 and won’t be released until 2014.

Docking station for Surface Pro: This is an accessory only for the Surface Pro and Surface Pro 2 and allows you to connect your tablet to a variety of peripherals. The dock offers additional USB ports, gigabit ethernet, mini DisplayPort (for external monitor with full 3840 x 2160 pixel resolution), microphone and headphone ports. The docking station is priced at $199.99 and won’t be released until 2014.

Wireless Deck Writing Adapter: This is interesting, Microsoft will also make an accessory available for another accessory. Basically, it is a wireless adapter that connects via a magnet to any Touch or Type case, allowing users to interact with the device from afar using Bluetooth technology. This adapter is priced at $59.99 and will be available to order on September 24.

USB car charger: The new charger allows you to charge your tablet without additional cables and also provides a USB port for charging other devices. This accessory will cost $49.99, but won’t be released until 2014.

Arc Touch Mouse Surface Edition: There’s nothing special about this mouse, just that it’s a special edition that matches the look of the new tablets and connects via Bluetooth version 3. The new mouse will be priced at $69.99 and will be available for pre-order on December 24. September.

Surface Music Kit: And then there’s the limited edition cover art that lets you remix your favorite songs and share them with the world. Microsoft doesn’t list the kit as an accessory, but yes, check http://www.surfaceremixproject.com/ to see how you can get one for free.

Additional features

The software giant is also adding some extras; Customers who purchase either device will receive 200GB of free SkyDrive cloud storage for two years, unlimited Skype calls to landlines for one year in more than 60 countries, and Skype WiFi.
